Forest Creek Golf Club North Course Reopens After Extensive Renovation

The North Course at Forest Creek Golf Club has reopened after an extensive renovation and restoration project undertaken by original course architect Tom Fazio.

Originally opened in 2005 as the second course at Forest Creek Golf Club, the North Course is a rugged layout with a pine barrens feel, flowing through sprawling sandy areas native to the Sandhills of North Carolina.

During the renovation, completed over the course of May to September 2019, Fazio made improvements from tee to green. The main updates:

  • Green surfaces updated from bentgrass to Champion Bermuda for improved year-round playing conditions
  • Greens expanded to their original, larger sizes
  • Bunkers restored for a scruffier visual appearance
  • Nearly 5 miles of drainage pipes installed underneath fairways for a firmer, faster playing surface
  • New short game area added to the practice facility

“The North Course is substantially better now than when I first built it,” Fazio said. “It is not often I am given a piece of land this beautiful and perfectly suited for golf with no preconceived ideas and confinements concerning development.”

Golfweek ranked the North Course 49th on its 2019 list of the 200 Best Residential Courses in the U.S., ahead of the South Course at Forest Creek, which ranked 78th.

“The North Course offers a unique and invigorating playing experience with its rugged, secluded feel and world-class shot values and conditioning year-round,” said Hugh Matthis, Director of Golf at Forest Creek Golf Club. “The renovation work improved what was already one of the finest layouts in the Pinehurst area and ensured that the course will play exactly as Fazio intended.”

With five sets of tees ranging from 4,938 to 7,209 yards and pristine playing conditions, the North Course can challenge players of all skill levels. Holes 16, 17 and 18 wrap around Forest Creek’s lake for one of the most memorable closing stretches in North Carolina.

Forest Creek Golf Club is an idyllic 750-lot master planned community with luxury real estate, dining and amenities and two Tom Fazio-designed golf courses. The club, tucked away just two miles from the Village of Pinehurst, N.C., winds through 1,265 pristine acres of pine forest and rolling sandhills on a former 3,000-acre family estate.
